Tonight’s movie – Stuck in Love
Saw this movie last night and generally enjoyed it. The main characters were writers and it reminded me of how much I too would like to become a writer. I write things down on my blog but one cannot consider themselves a writer until they are actually published. I hope to one day write a book and hopefully I´ll get motivated enough to do so in the near future.
As is often the case with writers, two of the characters believe themselves to have a higher IQ than most. Here is an excerpt that I quite enjoyed.
“Just think about it.
Procreation. You give to the
next one down the line.
That’s really all we’ve got.
Society, government,
money, religion,
careers, nuclear families,
monogamy.
These are all just highly creative
socially accepted delusions
that we impose on reality to try and gain
some semblance of control over our lives.
It gives us the illusion of choice.
It makes us feel a little
less like animals.
Animals. What do you mean?
Like evolution?
Yeah, evolution, exactly.
I do not believe in evolution.
There’s 400 billion stars
in the Milky Way alone,
making the amount of stars
in the entire universe
completely mind-boggling.
We are nothing.
If an asteroid hadn’t hit Earth
and wiped out all the dinosaurs,
we wouldn’t be here.”
Now that I read it I think I liked it a bit better when it was spoken by the sexy, promiscuous character in a bar. When it came out of her mouth I made a mental note to look it up and write it down in this blog.
However, giving it a bit more attention I find I do not agree with her assumption that the only thing “we’ve got.” I believe life to be a collection of memories. The sum total of one’s life are the memories, the actions done that influence others memories and of course any physical offspring. In short, I believe the universe is one big recording and my experiences and memories make up a very small part of this reality whatever that reality may be.
